For the Not-So-Perfect Figure
How To Make Design Lines Work For You

Lines can play tricks on our eyes and create illusions. To master the art of illusion in dress one must use the basic elements of line in order for it to work for, and not against you. Remember that lace patterns and their placement will have a line of their own.

The first step in making lines work for you is to take a realistic look at yourself to decide your individual figure needs. Ask yourself, "What should be emphasized or camouflaged?" Important factors to analyze when working with your figure type are height, width of hips, length of waist, bust/shoulder proportion.

The following style suggestions will help to put line to work for you:

Petite
Draw the eye upward from the bodice to the neckline with lace, beading and other trim detail.
Trim the edge of a fingertip veil to create vertical lines.
High, elaborately trimmed headpiece adds additional height.

Tall/Slim
Aim: To even out height: Horizontal lines will make the figure appear fuller and "cut" the height. Achieve this with the use of ruffled tiers, trims, and heavy re-embroidered laces going across the bodice.

Queen Size
Aim: To slenderize the figure: Draw attention to the face with the use of delicate lace at the neckline and bodice. Leave the middle of the dress clean lined and finish with trim at the hem.

Sloped Shoulders
Aim: To broaden the shoulder line: Extend the shoulder line with the use of ruffles, yokes and cap sleeves.

Full Bust
Aim: Smooth fit through the bodice: A more tailored style works nicely using all-over lace or appliques to soften the look. Shoulder sleeve detail to draw eye away from the bustline.

Small Bust
Aim: To add visual fullness to the bust: Ruffles and pleats will fill in the bustline. Medium and heavier laces used in the bodice and sleeve area will add dimension.

Large Midriff
Aim: De-emphasize the waistline: Draw the eye to the neckline with lace detail and an elaborate headpiece.
